What is Fairtrade?
Fairtrade empowers producers and communities in developing countries. By buying Fairtrade, producers get a fair price for their goods. A premium is paid direct to growers which is then reinvested in clean water supply, healthcare or education. Fairtrade addresses the injustices of conventional trade, which traditionally discriminate against the poorest producers in the developing world. Globally, consumers worldwide spent £1.6 billion on Fairtrade certified products in 2007- a 47% increase on the previous year directly benefitting over 7 million people- farmers, workers and their families in 58 developing countries. TNS CAPI omnibus findings showed that 70% of the population recognise the FAIRTRADE Mark. Findings also show understanding of the concept has increased, with 64% of the population linking the Mark to a better deal for producers in the developing world.
